Purbeck Dawn: A Taste of Brazil’s Cerrado
There’s something about that first coffee of the day. That moment when the day hasn’t quite got going yet, the coffee is brewing, and everything feels a little more manageable.
That’s exactly the kind of coffee we wanted Purbeck Dawn to be.
A smooth, full-bodied single-origin coffee from the Cerrado region of Brazil, Purbeck Dawn is roasted here in Dorset to bring out the naturally rich, chocolatey character that makes Brazilian coffee such a favourite.
From Cerrado, Brazil
Purbeck Dawn begins its journey thousands of miles from Dorset in Cerrado, southwestern Minas Gerais, one of Brazil’s most established coffee-growing regions.
Coffee here is typically grown between 900 and 1,250 metres above sea level, across gently rolling landscapes with remarkably consistent growing conditions.
Average temperatures sit at around 20°C, while the region receives approximately 1,600mm of rainfall each year, much of it reliably falling between December and March.
This consistency matters.
It gives coffee producers greater control over growing and harvesting, allowing them to concentrate on quality rather than constantly reacting to unpredictable weather.
Cerrado's coffee producers are also known for combining generations of coffee-growing knowledge with modern agricultural technology. Careful management and controlled harvesting help producers pick coffee at the right stage of ripeness and create the consistent cup profile the region has become known for.
What Does Purbeck Dawn Taste Like?
We roast Purbeck Dawn to a medium roast, allowing the natural characteristics of the Brazilian coffee to remain at the centre of the cup.
Expect a full body, balanced acidity and a rich chocolate-led flavour.
It's smooth and comforting rather than overly bright or acidic, making it an incredibly versatile coffee. It's equally at home as an espresso, americano or filter coffee, while its fuller body and chocolate character work particularly well with milk.
It's the sort of coffee you can come back to every morning.
Why Single Origin?
When we describe Purbeck Dawn as single origin, it means the coffee comes from one defined coffee-growing origin rather than being blended with coffees from several different countries.
That gives us the opportunity to celebrate what makes coffee from Cerrado distinctive.
For Purbeck Dawn, that's its consistency, body and wonderfully familiar chocolate character.
We don't want to roast those qualities away. Instead, our job at the roastery is to develop the coffee carefully so that the characteristics created in Brazil make it all the way into your cup.
From Brazil to Dorset
Once the green coffee reaches us, the final part of its journey happens here at Purbeck Roast.
We air roast our coffee in Dorset, carefully developing each batch to create the balance we're looking for. With Purbeck Dawn, that means developing enough sweetness and body to emphasise its chocolate notes while retaining the character of the original coffee.
The result is a straightforward but seriously enjoyable cup of coffee.
Brazilian grown. Dorset roasted.
And, we think, a pretty good way to start the day.
